Pilón

When we first visited, all day long we’d hear the steady pounding of the pilón, a giant wooden mortar and pestle used for grinding corn. The resulting meal is made into arepas, the traditional corn pancake that’s a staple at every meal. Nowadays, the sound of the pilón is rare. Most families have switched to growing cash crops, and they buy their cornmeal from the market in town.
